There are two ways you can disable videos from autoplaying in Edge. The first method allows you to block autoplay media globally, meaning once you enable this option, no website in the Edge browser can autoplay. You have to manually click on the video to start playing. The second method gives you much more control by allowing you to block autoplay videos on specific websites. Follow which method suits you the best. Before proceeding, make sure that you have installed the October 2018 update (v1809) in Windows 10. If you are unsure, you can check pretty easily. First, press Win + R, type winver and press Enter. You should see “version 1809” or higher on the second line. You can ignore the build number.

Block Autoplay Videos Globally

  1. To globally block autoplay videos, open the Edge browser, click on the menu icon (three horizontal dots) appearing on the upper-right corner and select “Settings.”
  2. In the Settings panel go to the “Advanced” tab. Here, either select “Limit” or “Block” under the Media Autoplay section to block autoplay videos. The changes are saved automatically and settings applied instantly.

Limit: When you select this option, Edge blocks autoplay media. However, the media starts playing when clicking anywhere within the website. Block: This option blocks the autoplay video just like the Limit option. The difference is that you have to specifically click on the media to play it.

From this point forward, no video in Edge autoplays. If you want to revert back, all you have to do is select the “Allow” option in Step 2.

Block Autoplay Videos per Site

  1. To block autoplay videos on a particular website, open the Edge browser, and go to the target website.

  2. Once you are on the website, click on the Lock or Globe icon appearing right before the website address in the address bar. Now, click on “Media autoplay settings” under the Media Autoplay section.

  3. Either select “Limit” or “Block,” and the settings are automatically saved.

Limit: This option blocks autoplay media. However, the media starts playing when clicking anywhere within the website. Block: This option blocks the autoplay video. To play the video you have to specifically click on the media.

That is it. You’ve successfully blocked autoplay videos on that specific website. If you want to enable autoplay again, just select “Allow” in Step 3. Alternatively, if you want to allow multiple sites to autoplay videos, it is better to use the Edge settings panel. For that, click on the “Menu” icon and select the “Settings” option. Go to the “Advanced” tab, and click on the “Manage permissions” button under the Website Permissions section.

Here you will find all the websites you’ve blocked from auto-playing videos. Click on the “x” icon next to the website to remove it from the block list and allow autoplay media.
